Description
Consultation on weekend voting: IET comments to the Ministry of Justice.
Abstract
Remote voting, whether by postal or electronic means, if implemented effectively, would seem likely to improve participation rates. However, it is essential that the security issues are fully addressed. There will need to be a high level of confidence in the software and sub-systems used throughout the voting system. There needs to be a demonstrable audit trail such that an elector could confirm that their vote has been correctly registered and counted. It is also vital to ensure that those with disabilities can access the voting system. This implies following the appropriate web standards to facilitate access, for example, by blind citizens using screen readers.
