About this event
Scanning electron microscope (SEM) is one of the most powerful instruments that can image and analyse bulk specimens. Usually, SEM images are in the grey scale level. With intensity different levels, mechanical contrast and artefacts can be detected properly.
In this seminar, we propose to give an overview about the current colorisation techniques for general images and SEMimages. A new colourisation is then proposed to improve mechanical contrast of the SEM grey images, and which is simple and user- friendly. Furthermore, the new developed technique for SEM images will be discussed and shown.
About the speaker – Dr. Sim Kok Swee

Dr. Sim Kok Swee has delivered significant research outputs in the area of electron microscopy (EM). He has been working in international research centers: the Institute of Materials & Research Engineering which is affiliated to National University of Singapore, and the Center of IC Failure Analysis in National University of Singapore. He is now serving the Multimedia University, having active and productive research activities in EM as well as other fields.
Dr. Sim and his research group in medical imaging and bio materials have developed robust and creative image colorisation techniques. When interacting with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the techniques enable image colorisation for SEM image quality. This enhances the analysis skills to study the image mechanism at nanoscale level.
This fundamental mechanism has wide applications. For example, Dr. Sim is now investigating the application of creative image colorisation technique onto magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system. With further understanding of the image signal and noise characteristics, Dr. Sim’s group has also designed creative image colorisation techniques which are not only limited to medical images and electron microscope images, but also applicable to general images.
Dr. Sim’s research is supported by grants from the Multimedia University and Government. Many findings have been published in the Journal of Microscope and the Microscopy Research & Technique and attracted attention of significant national media including Malaysia RTM2. Furthermore, Dr. Sim has won two International Achievement Awards from the 2005 World Conference in Applied Computing (USA), and the 2006 World Congress in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, and Applied Computing (USA). For national achievement, Dr. Sim has also won the Gold Medal Award in the Invention, Innovative & Technology Exhibition 2008 (ITEX). He is currently working closely with various overseas institutions and hospitals: Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering from National University of Singapore, Applied Physics Department from Curtin University of Technology, Australia, Melaka State Hospital, and Putra Specialist Hospital.
