About this event
This year’s IET Faraday theme ‘Technology for life’ is an exploration of incredible technologies that are saving lives and improving the quality of life for millions of people across the world.
The programme is split into four topic zones, each concentrating on a specific area of engineering and technology that is helping to save lives, as follows:
World water
The health issues surrounding water management are explored in terms of water supply, waste water disposal and flood prevention. The key role that scientists and engineers play in these areas is discussed.
Nature reinvented
The link between the properties of a material and the job for which it can be used is examined in the context of prosthetic devices such as artificial limbs.
Remote surgery and operations
The subject of robotic and remote controlled surgery is used to understand the subject of the electromagnetism and the electromagnetic spectrum. Also examined are the ethical and moral issues that new technology often presents.
Brain waves
Different medical management techniques are covered, as well as learning how modern technology can be used to co-ordinate the actions of robot swarms.
Although the IET Faraday lectures Focussed on Grade 11 maths and science learners, younger persons, students, adults and senior citizens with an interest in science and technology will also find the Faraday Lecture fascinating and educational.
Teachers please note!
Teachers who attend the Faraday Lecture will be able to take a DVD copy of the lecture back to their schools free of charge.
