Stage three: interview

Guidance about the professional review interview for registration applicants

All applicants for Chartered or Incorporated Engineer registration are required by the EC(UK) to have a professional review interview. Applicants for Engineering Technician may be invited for interview at the discretion of the IET.

Purpose and content

The purpose of the interview is to allow two senior peer-review interviewers to make an assessment of your professional competence and give you an opportunity to expand on the information in your application. The interview will also clarify any outstanding issues and give you the opportunity to demonstrate your commitment to the profession.

It is not a technical examination, but you should be prepared to explain the technical content and fundamentals of your work. Matters of a commercial sensitivity are unlikely to be an essential part of the interview and you should avoid raising them.

You should remember that this is your opportunity to present yourself and your case for registration to the IET in person.

The interview lasts about an hour and is conducted in a relaxed atmosphere. The interviewers will not make a decision about your application, but in accordance with the EC(UK) regulations, will make a recommendation about your application which will be reviewed by a registration panel. For this reason, you will not receive a decision on the day of the interview itself.

Location

On your application form you will have indicated your preferred venue for interview and your registration coordinator will liaise with you about the arrangement of the interview. Most interviews take place at Savoy Place in London, but interviews also take place around the country and internationally. In the event that it is not possible to arrange an interview within a reasonable distance, teleconferencing may be an option.

Preparation for the interview

Please bring a copy of your completed application form and your current development plan with you as the interviewers will refer to both during the interview.

You are advised to arrive a little early for the interview and spend some time reading through your application so the details are fresh in your mind.

All candidates must present valid photo identification at the interview. The following forms of identification are acceptable: a valid passport, a valid Government issued National Identity Card or a valid driving licence with photo.

Time scales

From the time that your application is approved for interview, we aim to contact you within two weeks to discuss the arrangements. At certain peak times it may take longer.
